WCS Symposium attracts over 900 to Las Vegas; Major FSCT Annual Meeting awards presented.

In conjunction with the FSCT's 83rd Annual Meeting, the 27th Biennial Western Coatings Societies' Symposium & Show was held for the first time in Las Vegas at the Westin Casuarina Hotel, November 7-9. Attended by 963 industry personnel and featuring 120 tabletop exhibits, the theme of the event, "Spirit of Cooperation," reflected the mutually supportive arrangement between the FSCT and the West Coast Societies (Arizona, Golden Gate, Los Angeles, Pacific Northwest, and Rocky Mountain).

Featured presentations at the technical program included the Mattiello Memorial Lecture, "Bring Back the Steel? The Growth of Plastics in Automotive Applications," by Dr. Rose A. Ryntz, of Visteon, and the Technical Focus Lecture, "Accelerated UV Weathering of Polymeric Systems: Recent Innovations and Perspectives," by Dr. Joannie Chin, of National Institute of Standards and Technology.

The FSCT presented its most prestigious award--the George Baugh Heckel Award, to Past-President Thomas E. Hill, of The Coatings Alliance. This award recognizes the contributions that Mr. Hill has made to the organization's interest and prestige.

The 2005 President's Award was presented to Dr. Raymond Fernando, of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, for his efforts in developing the FSCT's Advancements in Coatings Series in 2005.

The John Gordon Best Paper Award recognizes the best paper presented at the Technical Program, based on new and original scientific content and presentation effectiveness. The first prize for this award was given to Jeffrey Quill, William Wurst, and Patrick J. Brennan, of Q-Panel, and John Boisseau and Donald Campbell, of BASF Corp., for their paper on "Accelerated Acid Etch for Automotive Clearcoats: A Joint Research Project Provides Lab and Field Correlation." Honorable Mentions went to Ahmet Nebioglu and Mark Soucek, of The University of Akron, for "Investigation of Properties of UV-Curing Acrylate-Terminated Unsaturated Polyester Coatings," and to A. Thorn, A. Adams, T. Gichuhi, W. Novelli, and M.A. Sapp, of Halox, for "Improved Corrosion Control Through Nontoxic Corrosion Inhibitor Synergies."

Poster session winners included: First Prize--Erika Pedraza, The University of Akron; Second Prize--Laura Johnson, Cal Poly State University; and Third Prize--Casey Greet, Cal Poly Pomona.

The WCS Symposium was preceded by a series of one-day short courses sponsored by the FSCT's Professional Development Committee (Dr. Jamil Baghdachi, of Eastern Michigan University, Chair). Courses included Aerospace Coatings; Film Formation and Crosslinking; and Formulation of Waterborne Coatings.

At the WCS Opening Session, Rose Ryntz presented Trish Jones with a memento recognizing the team efforts of the WCS organizers. On behalf of the FSCT, President Fritz Walker said, "The FSCT deeply appreciates the opportunity to work in collaboration with several of its Constituent Societies in this successful venture."

FSCT Annual Meeting

In an historic vote at its November 6 meeting, the FSCT Board of Directors unanimously approved sweeping changes to the organization's bylaws that significantly revised the structure of the FSCT's governing Board and eliminated its Executive Committee (see related article on page 10). Effective in February 2006, the restructure will replace the current 36-member Board of Directors with a new nine-member Board who will be selected directly by the membership in an election scheduled to take place January 2-22.

During the Board Meeting, the FSCT Board elected for two-year terms Dr. Rose Ann Ryntz, of Visteon, as President, and Dr. Yasmin Sayed-Sweet, of Alberdingk Boley, Inc., as Vice President. Joseph Pontoski, FSCT Staff Controller, was elected to a one-year term as Secretary-Treasurer.
