WCI STEEL SUPPORTS GOVERNOR'S ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS

WARREN, Ohio, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- In light of Governor Voinovich's announcement today, WCI Steel, Inc., issued the following statement:
WCI Steel, Inc., which has made significant strides with respect to emissions reduction, recycling and environmental protection, wholeheartedly supports Governor Voinovich's efforts to encourage Ohio companies to voluntarily participate in environmental programs.
"We support the governor's efforts and hope other companies will volunteer their participation in these programs," said James V. Stack, president of WCI Steel. "We strongly believe that Ohio Industry can effectively work together with government to benefit the environment."
Information provided today by the governor's office was based on data reported by WCI in 1991. However, WCI's 1992 report indicated that emissions decreased 12.5 percent from emissions reported in the 1991 data.
In 1992, WCI began participating in the state and federal Environmental Protection Agencies' "33/50" program, a voluntary program designed to reduce nationwide emissions of 17 targeted chemicals by 33 percent in 1992 and by 50 percent in 1995.
"WCI is pleased to contribute to Ohio's leadership in participation in this program," Stack said. "We achieved our goal in 1992 and we'll reduce our emissions by more than the 50 percent goal in 1995.
"WCI has made and will continue to make significant investments in environmental protection and recycling, maintaining our compliance with all state and federal regulations," Stack added.
WCI's subsidiary, the Youngstown Sinter Company, has helped WCI reduce its total toxic releases by more than 70 percent since 1988 by recycling iron and steelmaking wastes to produce sinter, a key material in steel production.
For example, the sinter process has reduced the release of the manganese compound from 1.8 million pounds in 1988 to less than one million pounds in 1992.
WCI Steel, Inc., Warren, Ohio, is a 100-percent-cast flat-rolled steel producer with an annual raw steel capacity of 1.5 million tons. An integrated steel company, WCI Steel produces a wide range of flat- rolled products, including hot and cold rolled sheet, hot-dipped galvanized products, silicon electrical steels and nickel-flash terne coated products in carbon, alloy and high-strength grades.
