WAYNE AND GARTH PARTY ON WITH MATTEL TOYS
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Mattel Inc. (NYSE: MAT) will

introduce a line of games based on "Wayne's World," Paramount Pictures' $160-million-blockbuster movie that grew out of a "Saturday Night Live" television skit about two teenagers who broadcast a public access talk show from a suburban basement.
Mattel's new games division will ship several different "Wayne's World" games to retailers in September, including a unique 3-D card game and a VCR board game, the latest in video and game technology.
The "Wayne's World Game" includes an interactive VHS video cassette featuring original footage of Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey). Through their special brand of suburban teenage heavy metal humor, Wayne and Garth talk to the game players and instruct them on how to play the timed game. At periodic intervals, Wayne and Garth reappear to interact with the players and challenge them to get to "Party Central." The pair has worked directly with Mattel on scripting the video.
"Most excellent!," said Larry Bernstein, senior vice president of marketing at Mattel, when asked to comment about the deal. "An estimated 25 percent of boys 12 to 17 years old have seen the movie 'Wayne's World' at least four times," he said. "We expect sales will be strong, particularly as our game will be in stores hot-on-the- heels of the recently released video cassette version of the movie."
Bernstein also pointed to the popularity of the movie in international markets, where it has generated $40 million to date. And, expectations are high that its box office strength will continue as it expands to other countries such as Japan, traditionally a robust U.S. movie market.
Mattel Inc., which reported 1991 record net sales of $1.65 billion, is a worldwide leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of children's toys. With headquarters in El Segundo, Calif., Mattel has offices and facilities in more than 20 foreign countries and sells its products in more than 100 nations throughout the world.
