WAVEDEC FROM ICS ENABLES COMPUTER APPLICATIONS FOR VOICE, SOUND AND MUSIC; HALF THE COST AND SIZE OF COMPETITIVE AND AUDIO ICS

VALLEY FORGE, Pa., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Integrated Circuit Systems Inc. (ICS) (NASDAQ: ICST) today announced Wavedec, a new business audio integrated circuit (IC) that offers voice-quality sound at half the price of competitive products. The Wavedec audio codec (COder/DECoder) represents the first entry to the voice-application segment of the business audio market called office audio. Its low price allows Wavedec to be cost-effectively built in to the motherboard of new PCs, laptops and notebooks. Voice-quality audio enables developers to create such applications as document and e-mail voice annotation, talking presentations, interactive games, audio "help" in software programs, and language instruction and other training.
Wavedec is a mixed-signal IC providing low-cost recording and playback capabilities in multimedia audio applications for desktop PC, notebook PC, add-in card and PCMCIA card designs. At half the size of stereo business audio products, and incorporating a power-down mode that can reduce power consumption by up to 97 percent, Wavedec is well suited to portable PCs. Compatible with both 8-bit and 16-bit sound files, Wavedec can record up to 12-bits/sample, 44 K samples/second of monaural sound. For the vast majority of business audio applications, Wavedec exceeds the market expectation for audio quality.
David Taylor, director of business development and marketing for the Multimedia Products division, said, "Some business audio manufacturers try to tell users that only 16-bit audio will do. But our research shows that the 12-bit office audio capabilities found in Wavedec, if compatible with 16-bit sound files, are indistinguishable to the ear for most applications, and offer a price that the PC end user finds much more attractive. We believe there's a large unmet need for affordable office audio, and Wavedec meets that need."
Edward Arnold, president and chief executive officer of Integrated Circuit Systems, said, "With its sound quality, price and small footprint, we believe that Wavedec enables our OEM customers to bring audio capability to every PC, whether it's at home, on the desk or in the briefcase. As a result of this sound capability available on standard PCs, audio business applications will mushroom, becoming standard tools in the office environment.
WAVEDEC -- SMALL, LOW-COST CHIP SUITABLE FOR WIDE RANGE OF DESIGNS
Wavedec, offering digital audio 8- or 16-bit record/playback, features fully programmable sample rates ranging from 4.0 kHz to 48.0 kHz, DAC output oversampled to simplify external filtering, four data formats, 16 output attenuation levels and an 8-bit log-scale digital volume control. Wavedec also comes with digital filters that improve both record and playback quality. Wavedec, which interfaces to the ISA bus, is available in a 44-pin PLCC package that is only . 476" square, compared to .997" square for competitive products.
 PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
Sample quantities of Wavedec are available to OEMs now. At less than $7 each in volume quantities, Wavedec is expected to add less than $20 to the retail cost of a user's PC. ICS expects Wavedec-equipped PCs to reach market in first quarter 1994. First applications by PC manufacturers will be shown by ICS at Comdex in Las Vegas, Nov. 15-19, 1993.
ICS has been a leader in the design of standard audio components since 1989, when it introduced the first in a series of wavetable lookup synthesis ICs. ICS also designed the well-known Disney Sound Source audio generator, an 8-bit PCM circuit for consumer electronics and low- cost PC applications, and the synthesis IC on the UltraSound sound board from Advanced Gravis.
