JEREMY Corbyn has been told by his deputy Tom Watson he must change to save "the soul of the Labour Party".

In a warning to the party leader, Watson admitted Labour was in "crisis" after nine MPs quit last week, eight of them to join the new Independent Group, and all of them blaming Corbyn's lack of action on anti-Jewish elements in the party for leaving. Watson said: "Jeremy needs to understand that to be in Number 10 he needs to change the Labour Party. We have got to eradicate anti-Semitism, anti-Jewish racism in all forms."

Speaking on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, he added: "I think the situation is so grave now that he understands he needs to make a personal intervention."

Watson said he had received 50 complaints of anti-Semitism from party colleagues which he had passed on to the leader.

He said: "The test for him as leader is to eradicate anti-Semitism.

"It is not Labour Party members who will be the judge of that, it is the British Jewish community. I think he understands now that if he is ever to be prime minister, he needs to rebuild that trust."
