WASTE MANAGEMENT INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCES JOINT VENTURE AGREEMENT
TO DEVELOP ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES IN INDONESIA
OAK BROOK, Ill., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Waste Management International plc , one of the world's largest providers of waste management and environmental services, today announced a joint venture in Indonesia, marking further expansion by the company in Asia.
The company, a majority-owned subsidiary of Waste Management Inc. (NYSE: WMX), said that it has entered into an agreement with PT Bimantara Citra to develop environmental service projects in Indonesia starting with a chemical waste treatment facility which will provide service to industry in West Java, subject to receipt of the appropriate permits.
Work on the facility is expected to start this year and be operational by about 1995. The facility will serve a wide range of industrial multinational companies based in Indonesia, as well as local customers. Waste Management International and PT Bimantara Citra will work together to further identify and develop projects throughout Indonesia involving the collection, treatment and disposal of municipal solid waste and chemical wastes, as well as wastewater treatment, trash- to energy systems, waste reduction, recycling and remediation activities.
Waste Management International and Bimantara will own 70 percent and 30 percent, respectively, of the joint venture company.
The agreement marks Waste Management International's further expansion in Asia. The company is constructing an integrated chemical waste treatment center in Hong Kong, which should be operational by 1993. The company also has projects in Brunei.
Bimantara is a major industrial group in Indonesia with a portfolio of widespread interests, including petroleum, electronics, telecommunications and manufacturing. Ed Falkman, chief executive officer of Waste Management International, said: "This is an exciting development for us for several reasons. The first is that Bimantara is an important company in Asia and brings to the agreement its knowledge and network across the Indonesian market. Asia is an area which is rapidly opening up and acknowledging its awareness of the need to protect and improve the environment, something which is the essence of Waste Management International's business."
