WASHINGTON STATE REPUBLICAN CHAIRMAN SAYS DEMOCRATS SHOULD

HOLD HEADS IN SHAME FOR RESISTING SUBPOENA OF HOUSE BANK RECORDS
BELLEVUE, Wash., May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by the Washington State Republican Party:
The vote by Washington state's Democratic members of Congress to refuse a Justice Department subpoena of records from the scandal- ridden House bank is a shameful ploy, said State Republican Chairman Ben Bettridge.
"Every Democrat in Congress from Washington state should hang their head in shame for attempting a ploy to continue the national disgrace of the House bank," said Bettridge. "It's time the Democrats realize that only after all the records have been opened to public scrutiny will the American people have the answers to the questions they deserve."
Speaker Tom Foley attempted to resist the subpoena issued last week on behalf of Special Counsel Malcom R. Wilkey. Foley asked the House to fight the subpoena in court. Washington Democrats Norm Dicks, Jolene Unsoeld, Al Swift and Jim McDermott supported Foley's attempts to keep the records secret.
Foley's attempt to keep the records from the special counsel failed when a large number of Democrats joined all Republicans in voting against fighting the subpoena. The House then adopted a Republican-sponsored resolution to comply with the subpoena.
Wilkey, a retired Federal judge, is seeking the bank records as part of a preliminary inquiry into possible criminal violations. Wilkey said in a letter to House members Monday that he already found evidence of a "classic check-kiting scheme."
"Clearly, the American people are angry. They have had enough of the perks and privileges of the Democrats in Congress," said Bettridge. "They want and deserve full disclosure on this issue, so we can begin to restore the pride our nation once had in its Congress."
