WASHINGTON STATE EMPLOYMENT SECURITY DEPARTMENT: RE-EMPLOYMENT CENTERS ASSIST BOEING WORKERS

OLYMPIA, Wash., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Special assistance for laid-off workers is available at a new Boeing Re-Employment Center in Renton, Employment Security Commissioner Vernon Stoner said today.
"The Renton center is the first of two to be established with resources from Boeing, the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges and a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor," Stoner said. "It is the largest federal dislocated worker aid package the state has ever received. The program is administered by the Employment Security Department and Boeing."
The multi-service center will provide a wide range of services including testing and assessment, unemployment insurance, referral to community and social services, retraining, entrepreneurial and on-the-job training, job search assistance, job development and placement, career and peer counseling and educational planning. The program is also contracting with the Snohomish Private Industry Council for entrepreneurial training.
Another center in Everett will open next month. Pierce County residents will be served through the Private Industry Council-operated Tacoma Re-Employment Center.
The centers are staffed by the project's personnel, Employment Security, community and technical colleges and by representatives of Boeing Outplacement Service, the IAM/Boeing Quality Through Training Program and Private Industry Councils.
The grant application and planning was developed by a Boeing labor-management committee made up of representatives from Boeing, the International Association of Machinists District 751, the Seattle Professional Engineering Employees Association, Employment Security, Private Industry Councils and a consortium of community and technical colleges.
Gov. Mike Lowry, Boeing officials and union representatives will participate in opening ceremonies at 1 p.m. today at the Re-Employment Center, 2400 E. Valley Road in Renton.
