 WARNER-LAMBERT CEO GOODES SAYS SECOND-QUARTER
SALES TO RISE BY MORE THAN 8 PERCENT
WASHINGTON, June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Warner-Lambert Company (NYSE: WLA) expects second-quarter sales to exceed the 8 percent increase reported for the first three months of the year.
Addressing a financial group here today, Melvin R. Goodes, Warner-Lambert's chairman and chief executive officer, also said that despite the investment behind several new product launches, second- quarter earnings per share will be ahead by about 13 percent. "That places us on track for a 15 percent gain for the first half and for the full year 1992," he said, "creating a record of 28 consecutive quarters of strong double digit earnings gains, excluding non-recurring."
Second-quarter sales gains are across-the-board, according to Goodes, with the pharmaceutical and consumer sectors both showing strength. In particular, he pointed to the improvement in the domestic consumer businesses where the sell-in of Cool Mint Listerine has been a positive factor.
The pharmaceutical sector continued to lead the way, Goodes reported, aided by strong performances by Accupril, Dilantin, Loestrin and Lopid.
According to Goodes, the company expects to launch Nicotrol, its nicotine patch for smoking cessation, in the third quarter. "Reflecting its lower nicotine content than competitive products and its design for waking hours, we believe Nicotrol can make a major contribution as one element in a comprehensive smoking-cessation program," he said.
"We're working with Smoke Stoppers to plan Nicotrol's introduction through HMOs, hospitals, labor unions and corporations as part of their ongoing wellness programs," Goodes said. "This approach will position us well in a marketing-driven product area, where our traditional strength in dealing with consumers will provide a significant competitive advantage."
In the course of his comments, Goodes emphasized that Warner- Lambert's mix of health care and consumer products businesses has earned the company a unique place within its industry.
Warner-Lambert is a worldwide company devoted to developing, manufacturing and marketing quality health care and consumer products. It employs approximately 34,000.
