BURBANK, Calif., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Warner Bros. Worldwide Retail has signed an agreement with Toshiba America, Inc. for the purchase and installation of state-of-the-art multimedia equipment in Warner Bros. Studio Stores across the country, it was announced today by Peter Starrett, president of Warner Bros. Worldwide Retail.
Part one of the agreement calls for the sale of a 90-inch High Definition (HD) Projection TV system, including MUSE LD players, a MUSE decoder, a scan converter, a computer and a 32-inch HD monitor, as well as the installation of a 25' x 15' video wall in the flagship Warner Bros. Studio Store in New York City. The 30,000 square foot store, located on Fifth Avenue at 57th Street, is scheduled to open in late October of this year.
Part two of the agreement between Warner Bros. Worldwide Retail and Toshiba calls for the sale of 80 video wall systems -- the same as for the New York store prototype -- to be installed over the next two years in Warner Bros. Studio Store locations throughout the country. These technologically advanced display monitors will feature a continuous program drawn from the vast assortment of Warner Bros. entertainment materials -- feature films, television programming and classic animation as well as music videos.
A division of Warner Bros. Consumer Products, a Time Warner Entertainment Company L.P., Warner Bros. Worldwide Retail currently operates over 40 Studio Stores across the country. In line with Time Warner's policy to introduce cutting-edge technology to entertainment, Warner Bros. Worldwide Retail will use multimedia audio and video equipment to showcase innovation and new trends in the entertainment industry.
The multimedia equipment described in this agreement will be supplied by Toshiba America Consumer Products, Inc., a subsidiary of Toshiba America, Inc.
"The introduction of advanced technology is becoming a crucial factor in the future success of the entertainment industry," said Mr. Starrett. "Warner Bros. is very happy to work with our partner, Toshiba, to bring customers the latest in entertainment technology and to provide a premier entertainment shopping experience in our Studio Stores."
"This agreement is another example of the cooperative relationship that has developed through the alliance between Time Warner and Toshiba," stated Yoshinori Hirotoh, vice president at Toshiba America, Inc. "Working together with Time Warner, we see a great opportunity for the development of high technology hardware in the entertainment business. At Toshiba, we plan to continue to introduce cutting-edge technology -- such as HDTV and Virtual Reality -- to improve entertainment systems and to enrich people's lives."
Warner Bros. Studio Stores are a unique combination of entertainment and retail merchandising that present exclusive Warner Bros. products to consumers in an exciting and informative environment reminiscent of a Hollywood studio back lot. The exclusive product assortment includes adult and children's apparel, accessories, gifts and a special gallery section devoted to animation art. Each store is designed to reflect the glamour and excitement of Warner Bros., whose images and properties are among the most recognizable in the world, from Batman to Bugs Bunny to classic Hollywood stars.
Located in select shopping areas, Warner Bros. Studio Stores have, since their premiere in the fall of 1991, exceeded all projected sales performance marks and drawn blockbuster repeat business in all age groups, defying a national slump that has plagued other retailers. Warner Bros. Worldwide Retail is well on its way to meeting its expansion goal of 60 stores by year's end, including six in the United Kingdom.
