WARNER BROS. TO PROGRAM EIGHT NIGHTS OF RUSSIAN TELEVISION
NEW YORK, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Time Warner Inc. (NYSE: TWX) will be the first company to provide American programming dubbed into Russian for broadcast in the former Soviet Union. "Warner Week in Russia" previewed last evening and will continue for eight historic nights, it was announced today at the United Nations by Michael Jay Solomon, president of Warner Bros. International Television. Ostankino, formerly known as Gosteleradio, the national broadcasting authority, will broadcast the programs to some 200 million television viewers in the independent republics of the former Soviet Union.
The historic "Warner Week" on Ostankino television Channel 1 will consist of 18 hours of Warner Bros. entertainment programs shown during the eight nights from Jan. 26 to Feb. 2. Scheduled programs include one of America's top-rated shows, "Murphy Brown," the long-running hit "Perfect Strangers," the much acclaimed drama "Life Goes On," the mini- series "Napoleon and Josephine" and feature films "Bonnie and Clyde," "Superman," "Being There" and "The Postman Always Rings Twice." Warner Bros. International Television has donated the programming to the Commonwealth television in exchange for three minutes of advertising each hour.
On the occasion of "Warner Week in Russia," Robert Daly, chairman of Warner Bros. Inc., said: "Time Warner and Warner Bros. have been pioneers in bringing all segments of the media and entertainment business into the international marketplace. As part of Time Warner's globalization strategy, Warner Bros. is pleased to lead the way by providing a Russian-speaking TV audience with quality contemporary American programming dubbed into Russian."
Michael Jay Solomon, president of Warner Bros. International Television, added: "We hope that 'Warner Week' can be a first step in a meaningful multicultural relationship between Time Warner and the people of the Commonwealth that will exchange both intellectual and cultural entertainment and journalistic projects."
Yegor Yakovlev, chairman of Ostankino, said: "We consider this action as a very important event in cultural life and as one more step on the road to further developing good relations between our countries."
The 18 hours of programming to be shown to the Commonwealth people during "Warner Week" was dubbed into Russian in Tel Aviv, Israel, where a large community of expatriate Russian actors resides.
In the future, Warner Bros. International Television plans to provide a "Warner Hour" of programming on Commonwealth television each week. The hour will consist of cartoons and half-hour comedy programming with the legendary Looney Toons characters providing the bridge between programs. "Warner Hour" is already a staple on television in France and Spain and in 1992 will be seen in Germany and England.
Time Warner is the world's leading media and entertainment company with interests in magazines, filmed entertainment, cable television and television programming, recorded music and music publishing, and books.
