WARNER BROS., FUJI TELEVISION NETWORK ANNOUNCE PACT WITH OUTLAW PRODUCTIONS ON MULTIFEATURE FILM DEAL

Agreement is First of its Kind Between Fuji and U.S. Company
BURBANK, Calif., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Warner Bros. and Japan's Fuji Television Network Inc., a principal entity of Fujisankei Communications Group, have entered into a three-way agreement with Outlaw Productions to produce and distribute between four and seven feature films, it was jointly announced today by Terry Semel, president and chief operating officer of Warner Bros.; Hisashi Hieda, president and chief executive officer of Fuji Television; and Robert Newmyer and Jeffrey Silver, partners in Outlaw Productions.
The agreement is Fuji's first such arrangement with an American production company, following its funding commitment to David Puttnam's British-based Enigma Productions, which has resulted in such films as "Memphis Belle," "Meeting Venus" and the upcoming "Being Human," starring Robin Williams, all distributed by Warner Bros.
Stated Semel, "This partnership sets a precedent between Fuji Television and Warner Bros., in that each is an equal financial participant in the agreement. We are very pleased to begin this relationship between divisions of the largest American-owned and the largest Japanese-owned media companies, once again emphasizing the growing global orientation of our industry."
Hieda of Fuji Television said, "This co-production arrangement will provide marvelous opportunities for us to develop a significant relationship between two global media companies. We believe that the future of motion pictures relies on the work of today's young filmmakers and we are pleased to establish a situation, with Outlaw Productions and Warner Bros., that encourages such creative ventures.
"Our agreement has been characterized throughout its negotiations by a high level of trust and shared understanding that, we believe, suggests a long and productive relationship between our three companies."
Said Newmyer and Silver in a joint statement, "This agreement will bring tremendous impetus to the projects we're currently developing. Our goal has always been to bring a variety of interesting movies with strong filmmaker viewpoints to our audiences; working with Warner Bros. and Fuji will make this even more successful in the future. We look forward to developing this relationship to its fullest in the coming years."
Fuji Television is Japan's largest television production and distribution company. It has held the top position among Japan's television networks for more than a decade, and is the most prolific producer of Japanese-language feature films and television programs. Its film-rental totals have long dominated the top of the charts in Japan. Fuji is a central company of the Japanese media conglomerate Fujisankei Communications Group, which includes film, television, radio, video, records, newspapers, publishing and direct marketing.
Under the terms of its new agreement with Warner and Outlaw, Fuji will retain rights to distribute the jointly produced films in Japan.
Outlaw Productions is owned by Newmyer and Silver. The other principals in the company are producer Brian Reilly, co-producer Caroline Baron and Jennifer Billings, who heads development for the company. Outlaw has produced the critically acclaimed "sex, lies and videotape," as well as "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead," "The Opposite Sex," "Mr. Baseball," "Crossing the Bridge" and the current "Indian Summer."
Concluded Semel, "We're very pleased to welcome Outlaw Productions to Warner Bros. Their eclectic mix of films reflects a strong interest in encouraging the work of talented newcomers and artists both in and out of the mainstream. They will add an important component to our upcoming roster of films.
"We are also looking forward to continuing our relationship with Fuji, which began with our distribution of `Memphis Belle' and `Meeting Venus.'"
