WARD'S REPORTS ESTIMATED PRODUCTION

DETROIT, Dec. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. and Canada vehicle manufacturers -- except for some independent medium- and heavy-duty truck makers closed all their plants this week until Jan. 3 for the holiday season, Ward's Automotive Reports announced today.
When production for the 1994 calendar year starts next week, six plants will remain closed including General Motors Corp.'s Wentzville, Mo., facility, which ended production of Buick Park Avenues on Dec. 23. Wentzville remains closed until early 1995, when it begins producing GM's full-size vans.
Also, Ford Motor Co.'s plant in Oakville, Ontario, is closed until Jan. 31, when it starts production of the all-new front-drive Windstar minivan. Windstar replaces the rear-drive Aerostar which will be phased out of the Ford lineup after the '94 model year.
Of the remaining four plants to be closed next week, Ward's reported that GM's two car plants in Oshawa, Ontario, are down until February for changeover to reskinned Chevrolet Lumina sedans. Also, GM's Saturn plant in Spring Hill, Tenn., and Chrysler Corp.'s full-size van plant in Windsor, Ontario, do not restart production until Jan. 10, due to inventory control.
Meantime, Ward's said U.S. automakers are scheduled to assemble 529,000 cars and 453,000 trucks in January. Both are increases over January 1993's counts of 422,000 cars and 361,000 trucks.
Additionally, Canadian factories are slated in January to complete 83,000 cars and 68,000 trucks, 2.4% and 6.8%, respectively, below same- month 1992. First-month 1994 Canada output will be below January 1993 due to the aforementioned plant shutdowns.
