WAR ON DUMPERS; EXCLUSIVE CAB crackdown over hospital waste scandal.
THE Criminal Assets Bureau has been called in to help "clean out" rogue waste disposal operators.
Senior officials at the Department of the Environment demanded the crackdown after the recent discovery of two illegal dumps containing more than 100,000 tonnes of hospital waste.
Sources have confirmed that officers from the elite CAB met with senior government officials this week to thrash out how to put an end to illegal dumping.
A government source said: "It is a disgrace that these cowboys are making millions from illegal dumps.
"The government has been shocked at the discovery of human and medical waste at beauty spots such as the Glen of Imaal and Baltinglass."
Environment officials in every county are currently compiling lists of illegal dumps expected to contain hundreds of locations.
Gardai have vowed to prosecute anyone found to be associated with an illegal dump, including the companies which were given the contract, the sub-contractors who dumped the waste and the landowners.
The names and addresses of those suspected of involvement in illegal dumping will also be handed to the CAB.
A source said: "Officers from the CAB will be given all their details and illegal dump operators will be slapped with tax bills and CAB will apply for seizure of assets orders in the High Court."
Under current laws those convicted of running an illegal dump face fines of up to pounds 10 million as well as jail terms of up to 10 years.
