WANG SIGNS UP DICKENS DATA SYSTEMS AND ROBEC, INC.
 TO DISTRIBUTE RISC-BASED IMAGE SOFTWARE
LOWELL, Mass., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Wang Laboratories, Inc. (AMEX: WAN) today announced that it has signed distribution agreements with Dickens Data Systems and Robec, Inc., (NASDAQ-NMS: ROBC) under which the two firms will distribute Wang's OPEN/image for AIX imaging software products throughout the U.S. to value-added resellers (VARs) marketing solutions based on IBM's AIX operating system.
The agreements mark a major advance in implementing Wang's distribution strategy for its open systems software offerings. The strategy calls for expanding distribution channels for these products to reach VARs and resellers who offer solutions to markets not traditionally served by Wang.
Dickens is the largest distributor of AIX-related hardware and software in the U.S. Robec is a nationwide distributor and integrator of PC, UNIX, and network products and was recently authorized as a managing industry reseller (MIR) by IBM for its RISC System/6000 product line. OPEN/image for AIX is the first of Wang's advanced office productivity software products for open systems. It provides powerful images services to applications running on IBM Corp.'s AIX operating system for UNIX platforms and supports the Wang RISC Series and IBM's RISC System/6000 product family as image servers.
In addition to the OPEN/image for AIX imaging software products, both Dickens and Robec will also distribute Wang PC and PC local area network-based OPEN/image products to VARs, including resellers of Novell's NetWare.
"Wang's OPEN/image product set offers VARs the most flexible and efficient environment in the industry for image-enabling their applications," said David Goulden, Wang's vice president of marketing. "This broad appeal to a wide variety of VARs made it a natural step for us to team up with two leading distributors who between them service more than 3,000 VARs in the AIX and NetWare markets.
"Our relationships with Dickens and Robec clearly demonstrate our commitment to expanding the availability of Wang open software products to VARs and integrators offering solutions on non-Wang platforms," Goulden said. "Both companies' reputation for service and support, as well as their commitment to imaging in office technology, make them ideal partners for us in our efforts to facilitate broad acceptance of these software products."
Dickens, based in Roswell, Ga., provides product and support to more than 1,000 AIX VARs nationwide, many of whom have expressed interest in adding imaging capabilities to their product and service offerings. "In today's economy, VARs need the means to differentiate their products, cover more platforms, reach more markets, and lower development costs," said Jack Smith, vice president at Dickens.
"Wang's OPEN/image products, with their consistent and flexible software architecture, make it easy and cost-effective for VARs to add imaging to their applications," Smith said. "That's why they are ideally suited to help these VARs achieve their goals, and that's why we are excited about the opportunity to add this software family to our roster of products."
Robec, with headquarters in Horsham, Pa., and 20 offices across the country, services more than 2,700 PC and UNIX VARs with hardware platforms and integration services. "Many of our PC and UNIX VARs are now considering expansion into AIX platforms," said David E. Laquer, director, technology management, at Robec. "We have been rapidly expanding our market share in the document imaging area. Many of our customers are already integrating Windows-based PC workstations with UNIX systems and network servers. Adding OPEN/image for AIX and OPEN/image for NetWare to our product offering helps us broaden the solutions our resellers can offer their customers."
