WANG LABORATORIES AND HEWLETT-PACKARD COMPANY ENTER STRATEGIC RELATIONSHIP

LOWELL, Mass., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Wang Laboratories, Inc. (AMEX: QWAN.B, QWAN.C), and Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HWP) today announced a comprehensive strategic relationship to cooperatively market and sell Wang's industry-leading integrated imaging and office software on HP's world leading UNIX-based systems and servers. Under the agreement, Wang will develop these software products to run on the HP 9000 Series 800 business servers. The products also will be localized for sale worldwide by Wang and by third-party channel partners of both companies.
The agreement covers the entire suite of Wang's UNIX-based integrated software products designed specifically to improve productivity in the office, and includes Wang's OPEN/image software that enables customers to easily and inexpensively add imaging technology to new or existing applications. The agreement also covers Wang's recently announced integrated software products, including PACE for Open Systems, OPEN/office, and COBOL ReSource.
Wang is the world's leader in imaging with approximately 1,000 systems installed worldwide. HP is the world's largest supplier of UNIX-based computer systems and is the second largest midrange computer systems vendor in the United States (see Note A).
The agreement calls for Wang to market and resell HP 9000 Series 800 business servers in combination with Wang's integrated imaging and office software. Under the agreement, Wang will become a "Premier Solution Partner" for HP. HP will provide Wang with marketing and field support to assist Wang in promoting the sale of Wang's integrated software products. HP expects the agreement to leverage more than $100 million worth of HP's business systems over three years.
Donald P. Casey, president and chief development officer of Wang, said, "HP is among the most respected and successful companies in the information processing industry. As a result of this agreement, Wang and HP customers will have access to the world's leading imaging software on the world's most successful UNIX platform. This agreement also makes available to customers the complete spectrum of Wang's highly-regarded integrated office software solutions and powerful software tools on the HP 9000 Series 800 business servers."
As part of a cooperative sales and marketing strategy, Wang and HP will jointly invest hardware, software, and technical support to cooperatively market Wang's integrated imaging and office software on the HP 9000 Series 800 business servers to end user customers, and to new and existing Wang and HP channel partners. The agreement also includes a technology sharing provision between Wang and HP, which includes technical consulting on porting the Wang software, and the development and sharing of future product plans.
Joseph M. Tucci, president and chief executive officer of Wang, said, "HP's decision to co-market our integrated imaging and office software on the industry leading HP 9000 Series 800 underscores the quality, versatility, and competitive superiority of our products. Moreover, their decision to support our development efforts is a strong vote of confidence for Wang.
"Wang is proud to offer its integrated imaging and office software on both the HP 9000 Series 800 and the Wang RISC Series. This agreement, therefore, is a major advance in Wang's strategy of offering customers superior integrated imaging and office software and network integration services based on industry-standard platforms sourced from other companies. Wang Laboratories, through this new strategic relationship with HP, is fulfilling its commitment to provide the world's best integrated imaging and office software on the world's best open systems platforms."
Bernard Guidon, general manager of HP's general systems division, added that the cooperative nature of the agreement with Wang will result in a strong relationship that will benefit customers of both companies.
"This agreement provides HP customers with access to superior UNIX system-based imaging and office software and gives Wang users access to the No. 1 UNIX system-based computers in the industry," Guidon said. "It also opens up a host of new opportunities for potential customers who are seeking open-systems-based solutions for their office and imaging needs."
OPEN/image products offer the capability to image-enable applications running on a broad array of platforms. Industry standard PC's featuring MS Windows are used as clients. Image services are provided on industry-standard LANs using either NetWare or UNIX servers. Imaging functions include scanning, printing, faxing and storage of black and white, grayscale, and color images.
PACE for Open Systems provides customers with a set of application tools designed to allow codeless development of full featured client/server database applications for PCs running on Microsoft Windows Operating System.
OPEN/office is a sophisticated distributed electronic mail system based on international standards (CCITT X.400, X.500), designed for enterprise-wide environments with thousands of users.
COBOL/ReSource is a high-performance, easy-to-use application development toolkit designed to support the commercial COBOL applications environment for UNIX.
Wang expects that the OPEN/image software will be commercially available for the HP 9000 Series 800 business servers before the end of June 1993 and that PACE for Open Systems, OPEN/office, and COBOL ReSource will be commercially available in calendar year 1993.
The agreement has been approved and is supported by Wang's creditors' committee and is subject to bankruptcy court approval.
