WANG INTRODUCES COMPLETE NEW LINE OF PCS, MONITORS

LOWELL, Mass., Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Wang Laboratories (AMEX: WAN) today announced the availability of a new line of personal computers based on the Intel i486 family of CPU chips. This announcement completes the rollout that began in January with the introduction of four new PC models. The new line comprises the DTI-series of ISA models and the DTE-series of EISA models. Both DTI- and DTE- models are versatile, robust, desktop PCs that run i486 CPUs, including clock doubled (OverDrive) versions. Both series are available as either pre-configured packages or built-to-order systems.
Two new monitors are also available for use with the new PCs: the ASI-MON-14, a 14-inch multimode SVGA monitor, and the ASI-MON-15, a high performance, 15-inch monitor.
Twelve bundled system models are available, ranging from 486SX-25 to 486DX2-66; all include pre-installed Microsoft DOS and Windows operating environments, plus a mouse. Some of these models are also pre- configured for plug and play connectivity with Wang's VS systems, and include terminal emulation hardware, pre-loaded emulation software for both DOS and Windows, and Wang's Model 724 enhanced keyboard.
While pre-configured, bundled models provide a price advantage, quick delivery, and offer ready-to-go solutions, built-to-order systems provide the flexibility to tailor PCs to specific customer or application requirements. Wang continues its longstanding tradition of making custom-configured PC systems available to its customers by offering a build-to-order capability on all CPUs. The new line includes seven base CPUs and over 30 peripheral and software options.
All of the new PCs support Intel's clock-doubling technology, offer local bus video, optional secondary CPU cache up to 256KB, and other performance-enhancing options. Some of the new models include clock doubled DX2 CPU's as original equipment. Clock-doubled processors offer significantly improved performance over the original i486SX and i486DX CPUs by running the internal core logic at twice the speed of the PC's system memory and support logic.
System memory ranges from 4MB to a maximum of 32MB. Various storage options are available, including both IDE and SCSI storage devices. All systems support up to 5 peripherals, consisting of 2 internally mounted, 3.5 inch devices, plus 3 externally, accessible 5.25 inch, half-height devices. A 200 watt power supply is standard, providing ample power for fully configured systems.
ISA systems have 7 I/O slots, of which 5 are free after required options are installed. Two of the free slots have extension sockets that implement a local bus that complies with the specifications of the Video Electronic Standards Association (VESA). EISA systems have 8 I/O slots (6 free after required options); one of these provides a proprietary local-bus slot that accepts a local bus video card. Local- bus video enhances the performance of both Microsoft Windows and non- Windows applications.
Both the DTI-and DTE- series are certified for Banyan and Novell networks. Network interface cards and pre-loaded network client boot files are available as build-to-order options. The new PCs are also compatible with DOS, Windows, IBM's OS/2 v.2, and SCO UNIX operating environments.
Prices for the DTI- series of pre-configured ISA packages range from $1,599 for the DTI25 to $2,748 for the DTI266. DTE- series EISA models are priced from $2,536 for the DTE33, to $3,095 for the DTE250. The latter is an 8MB, dual floppy unit, with 128KB secondary cache and 330MB IDE hard drive, plus pre-installed DOS, Windows, and a mouse.
The ASI-MON-14 multimode SVGA monitor, priced at $432, offers sectional continuous horizontal scanning frequencies for the highest VGA-card compatibility on the market. The ASI-MON-15, at $649, employs the latest non-glare, flat screen CRT technology, plus a variety of advanced features, such as state-of-the-art programmable digital controls with 15 memory channels. Both monitors have a fine 0.28 mm dot-pitch, making them useful for imaging, graphics, desktop publishing, and other office automation applications.
All PCs and monitors are covered by a one-year, onsite warranty, plus toll free telephone support.
