WANG BRINGS CLIENT/SERVER APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT TO AIX USERS
LOWELL, Mass., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Wang Laboratories, Inc. (AMEX: QWAN) today announced PACE for Open Systems, a powerful client/server application development environment with integrated data dictionary that is available now for the IBM AIX operating system on the Wang RISC Series and IBM RISC System computers. PACE for Open Systems is a set of graphical application development and information management tools built upon a rules-based SQL relational database server. PACE provides a complete solution for the development and implementation of full-featured client/server database applications for PCs running the Microsoft Windows operating system.
PACE makes it easy to develop and maintain applications that support the changing business environment. PACE centralizes all data definitions and business rules in a Data Dictionary and drives all application development from this dictionary. All PACE components use Data Dictionary information to automate the application development process.
This data dictionary-focused approach benefits the MIS manager, the application developer, and the end user. Business rules, which define the integrity rules and business policies associated with a database, are stored centrally. Users can generate applications automatically, without coding, resulting in consistent enforcement of database constraints and simplified ongoing maintenance. A change in one place is reflected in all applications.
"Many companies today need to build new interactive applications to respond to a rapidly changing business environment," said Donald Casey, Wang's executive vice president and chief development officer.
"PACE for Open Systems provides a way to build new applications on standard platforms with minimal coding and with the ability to incorporate various media, such as image, voice, video and DOS objects," continued Casey.
"We are delivering on our commitment to Wang's VS customers who are now using the VS PACE product," added David Goulden, vice president of marketing. "A comprehensive set of migration tools is available to help them easily and cost-effectively move their applications to open systems when and if they choose to do so."
 Imaging Integration
Imaging users can easily, and without writing code, integrate PACE for Open Systems with Wang's OPEN/Image for AIX, enabling them to rapidly build applications that incorporate imaging technology. Customers gain the benefit of working with a single vendor for their image application development needs.
 Product Highlights
PACE for Open Systems is a set of application development and information management tools built upon a rules-based relational database. The PACE Data Dictionary supports database business rules, such as calculations and data validation checks, that applications throughout the database can share, eliminating the need for users to write rules for each application program. Storing and executing rules on the database server guarantees consistency of data, ensures easier maintenance, and provides better performance. PACE for Open Systems will be available in January 1993.
PACE Dictionary Builder for Windows lets customers define an applications's data properties and business rules, including referential integrity rules, calculations, and complex validation rules, from a Windows-based application. PACE includes all the logic needed to efficiently enforce business rules defined in the Data Dictionary. The price is $995 per client.
With PACE Application Builder for Windows, customers can generate and customize sophisticated client/server applications, without writing any code.
Application Builder uses information already stored in the data dictionary, enabling users to quickly select existing data and relationships to build a Windows-based application. Customers can integrate multimedia files and Windows objects into their business applications. The price is $995 per client.
PACE Query Builder for Windows is a data retrieval tool that enables programmers and nonprogrammers to access the information they need to retrieve from a database. Query Builder graphically walks the user through the data structures required to build a customized query, so that without writing code, the user can build complex queries and store them for later use. After defining a query, the user can access it from any Windows-based application that supports DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange). The price is $395 per client.
PACE Report Builder for Windows, using technology from Concentric Data Systems, Inc., enables users to automatically generate publication- quality reports that select, analyze, sort, group, and label data from a PACE database. Customers can design their reports in many different formats that can include mailing labels, preprinted forms, and form letters. The price is $295 per client.
With PACE Precompilers, customers can embed SQL syntax into C and COBOL programs, facilitating customized screen flow, data retrieval and update, and database access. PACE supports Embedded SQL for C and COBOL on both the Windows operating system client and AIX server platforms. Prices for the server range from $1,000 to $2,500, depending upon the number of users. The price per client is $150.
The PACE Administrator provides an easy-to-use, Windows-based interface for performing database administrative tasks such as creating, cataloging, and moving databases, as well as assigning users.
PACE Server for AIX is an SQL-based, rules-oriented database server that runs on the AIX server and communicates with applications running on PC clients with Microsoft Windows. It organizes and manages data and handles communications between database files and applications that need data access. Pricing ranges from $3,800 to $121,600, depending upon the number of users.
 Migration Tools
