WANG ANNOUNCES OPEN/IMAGE CONNECT IMAGING SOFTWARE; WINDOWS-BASED PRODUCT OFFERS EASY-TO-USE IMAGING CAPABILITY

LOWELL, Mass. Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Wang Laboratories, Inc., (AMEX: WAN) today announced the introduction of OPEN/image Connect, a Microsoft Windows-based software product that allows customers and value-added resellers to quickly and easily add imaging services to applications without modification.
Through PC client-level integration, OPEN/image Connect extends Wang's industry-leading imaging technology to users who choose not to modify core applications. The client-based software accesses information from the user's terminal emulator screen display through the Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) functions of Microsoft Windows and links this information to imaging data, without programming or otherwise affecting the application code in any way. Applications being accessed by the popular terminal emulators for CICS, IMS/DC, VM, CMS, TSO, DEC VAX, Wang RISC Series or IBM RISC System/6000, IBM AS/400, Wang VS, Windows and DOS applications can be image-enabled with OPEN/image Connect.
This solution is ideal for the rapid addition of imaging functions to existing applications and for prototyping of imaging applications that will eventually employ application-level integration using Wang's OPEN/image API and WorkStation products. It provides access to images stored on a PC, PC LAN, or a RISC Series server.
Open/image Connect is designed for use by both software developers and end users. It includes three software components: a Format Generator Utility, an Extract program, and the Integration Driver. The Format Generator is a point-and-click tool that allows users to designate data fields displayed via the PC's terminal emulator for data extraction. The Extract program performs the data extraction as directed by the application. The Integration Driver performs the client level integration between the application and imaging services.
The OPEN/image Connect Developer's Kits are available in two versions -- Base and Professional. There are two versions of the Integration Driver, one created with Microsoft Visual Basic and one created with Softbridge Bridge.
The OPEN/image Connect Base Developer's Kit includes all executable software and a User's Guide. The Professional Developer's Kit includes all executable software, the source code for the Integration Driver, a Programmer's Guide and a User's Guide. Developer's Kits can be ordered with OPEN/image Cabinet, a turnkey solution that files, stores and retrieves images in response to user queries.
Pricing for the Base Developer's Kits is $1,995 and $3,005 for the Professional Developer's Kit. OPEN/image Cabinet is an additional $495. Pricing for the OPEN/image Connect Runtime ranges from $275 to $395 per user. The OPEN/image Windows Runtime software is an additional $350 to $495 per user.
The Base Developer's Kit and the Connect Runtime package for Visual Basic are available immediately. The Professional Developers' Kit for Visual Basic will be available in April. Both of the Bridge versions will be available in May.
One of the first customers to use OPEN/image Connect will be Dickens Data Systems, a value-added distributor and reseller located in Roswell, Ga.
"The Connect product will give us and our resellers a quick and easy way to image-enable applications across multiple platforms," said Jack Smith, vice president of marketing at Dickens. "The fact that we can now add imaging capability to applications without needing to modify the source code is very important to us because as resellers, we often don't get access to the code. OPEN/image Connect's easy-to-use, point-and- click interface will help us and our resellers get solutions to market faster, with excellent imaging functionality."
