WANG ANNOUNCES ENHANCED IMAGING CAPABILITY FOR AIX, VMS AND IMS/DC PLATFORMS

LOWELL, Mass., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Wang Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE: WAN) today announced the availability of Release 2.0 for three of its flagship imaging products -- OPEN/image for AIX, OPEN/image for VMS and OPEN/image for IMS/DC. These enhanced imaging products solidify Wang's leadership in the imaging industry and extend the company's ability to offer state-of-the-art imaging on multiple platforms.
One of the first customers to use the new releases of AIX and VMS imaging products is Effective Management Systems, a large software developer and reseller located in Milwaukee, Wis. Tom Dykstra, vice president of product development, commented, "Our evaluation of these new products proved that they will be extremely easy to incorporate into our existing manufacturing applications. We have reviewed with customers and prospects our plans to image-enable these applications, and their response has been enthusiastic. Wang's ability to offer imaging on multiple platforms makes it an excellent choice for our marketplace."
OPEN/image for AIX - The OPEN/image for AIX product family was first made available in September, 1992, bringing Wang imaging to applications running under the AIX operating system on the Wang RISC Series or IBM RISC System/6000. Second releases are now available for three products of the family: OPEN/image API for AIX, OPEN/image Fax API for AIX, and OPEN/image WorkStation for UNIX.
In addition to the basic imaging functions of scan, display, print, copy, delete, and verify, Release 2.0 brings new functions, such as the optional Fax API, which allows RISC based applications to send image documents to remote fax machines. Highlights of Release 2.0 include:
-- New document database management functions, enabling the user
to list, rename, verify, count, and delete the contents of
 cabinets, drawers, and folders.
-- User interface enhancements that improve ease of use
-- Improved performance, reducing the amount of time required
to display images and increasing the number of transactions
an image server can perform per hour
OPEN/image for VMS - Release 2.0 of the imaging product set for Digital Equipment Corporation's VAX computers running the VMS operating system also consists of three products: OPEN/image API for VMS, OPEN/image Fax API for VMS, and OPEN/image WorkStation for VMS.
In addition to support for outbound faxes provided by the FAX API, Release 2.0 includes the following enhancements:
-- Support for color and grayscale images
-- New OPEN/image print servers for color and grayscale images
-- New document database management functions and performance
and interface improvements similar to those in Release 2.0
 of the AIX product set
-- Support for all OPEN/image servers, including the OPEN/image
 server for AIX
OPEN/image for IMS/DC - Release 2.0 of OPEN/image for IMS/DC enhances imaging capabilities for applications running on IBM's Information Management System/Data Communications. IMS/DC applications can access and control imaging functions in Wang VS, PC, PC/LAN, and RISC series imaging environments.
 Release 2.0 introduces the following:
-- Three new optional API packages: OPEN/image ImageManager for
 IMS/DC, OPEN/image Fax for IMS/DC, and OPEN/image ImageStation
 for IMS/DC
-- Support for the RISC Series processor as an image server
-- Support for multiple servers and multiple databases
-- Remote image access using the Wang VS as an image server
The ImageManager option enables users to maintain and administer image document files and database records. The Fax option allows users to send multiple image documents in a single function call to a destination phone number. The ImageStation option allows users connected to a mainframe via IMS workstations (such as 3278/3279 terminals) to print, display, or fax images to a designated image- capable workstation. This ImageStation capability allows users worldwide to enjoy the benefits of imaging without requiring them to upgrade to PCs.
