WANG ANNOUNCES EASY-TO-USE PRODUCTS TO LINK UNIX SYSTEMS WITH PC LANS
LOWELL, Mass., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Wang Laboratories, Inc. (AMEX: WAN) today announced its Connectivity Platform, a suite of communications products that make it easier for customers to include UNIX systems as servers in local area networks (LANs) with Microsoft Windows clients.
Customers can now link together a variety of different computer systems from Wang and other vendors, enabling PC users to access information, applications and other computing resources from these systems. PC users can improve their office productivity because the Connectivity Platform eliminates the complex and time-consuming processes that were required to share information among LAN, midrange servers and mainframe servers.
"The Connectivity Platform helps customers to implement UNIX systems in their offices easily and cost-effectively without having to replace existing systems," said David Goulden, Wang's vice president of marketing. "Organizations can now benefit by using the Wang RISC Series and the Connectivity Platform to allow UNIX systems to coexist and communicate with installed PC LANs and Wang VS, IBM, and DEC systems."
The Connectivity Platform marks the second in a series of open systems products Wang will bring to market to capitalize on its strategic alliance with IBM, announced in June 1991. Wang announced its OPEN/image products for the Wang RISC Series in June 1992 and will introduce additional products for the RISC Series this calendar year.
"The Connectivity Platform demonstrates Wang's commitment to add value to the RISC Series by offering superior office solutions. Customers now have single-source access to the industry-leading connectivity products they need to build open solutions that can access their existing enterprisewide information systems," said Goulden.
"The Connectivity Platform is a broad set of communication products and integration tools, sold and supported by Wang. Most other system vendors refer their customers to third parties to solve their integration needs. By purchasing these connectivity products from Wang, customers have the convenience of 'one-stop shopping' for products and support services," Goulden added. Protects Customer Investment
The Connectivity Platform supports both proprietary and open systems.
Customers can continue to use their Wang, DEC, and IBM systems, preserving previous investments. For customers moving toward open systems, the standards-based Connectivity Platform offers tools for communications, connectivity and interoperability. In addition, Wang has integration-tested all Connectivity Platform products and provides support services for the entire suite. The products were selected to provide superior performance and are sourced from Microsoft, Novell, Beame & Whiteside, VisionWare, IBM and Wang.
The Connectivity Platform allows PCs using Microsoft Windows to run applications concurrently on multiple servers within enterprisewide networks. It also allows users to move data among PCs and midrange servers (Novell, Wang VS, and RISC Series), and PCs and mainframe servers (IBM, DEC VAX and Wang host VS), enabling departments to more easily share information.
