WANG ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL ACTION TO SUPPORT CHAPTER 11 RESTRUCTURING

WANG ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL ACTION TO SUPPORT CHAPTER 11 RESTRUCTURING
LOWELL, Mass., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Wang Laboratories, Inc. (AMEX: WAN.B) announced today another step in the implementation of its worldwide restructuring program. The program, when fully implemented, is expected by management to return Wang to profitability and to enable a successful and timely emergence from the Chapter 11 protection which the company obtained on Aug. 18.
Wang Austria, Wang's smallest European subsidiary, which has operated unprofitably for several years, will go through a liquidation proceeding which will facilitate the transfer of Wang Austria's business to one of Austria's leading computer software and service companies.
Negotiations are currently under way with Management Data to build a new company within the Management Data group, which would provide maintenance, service and support to customers of Wang Austria, both in that country and in Eastern Europe. Wang Laboratories also expects to enter into an agreement under which Management Data would distribute Wang products in Austria and in Eastern Europe. Management Data is a subsidiary of Creditanstalt, one of Austria's leading financial institutions.
This is the second action within a week to improve the overall economies of Wang's European operations, which have come under pressure in recent years. The earlier action involved the elimination of the European management structure, thus enabling Wang's European regions and countries to report directly into Wang's Lowell home office.
Joseph M. Tucci, executive vice president, operations, said, "Each of these
actions will contribute to improving Wang's European performance. We look forward to working with Management Data to support the future needs of Wang's Austrian and Eastern European customers."
