WANG ADVANCES DOCUMENT IMAGING FOR DEC VAX SYSTEMS

WANG ADVANCES DOCUMENT IMAGING FOR DEC VAX SYSTEMS
LOWELL, Mass., April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Wang Laboratories Inc.

(NYSE: WAN) today announced OPEN/image for VAX, the latest addition to its OPEN/image family of document imaging products. This software makes it easy to add leading imaging technology to applications running on Digital Equipment Corp. (NYSE: DEC) (DEC) VAX computers.
OPEN/image for VAX demonstrates Wang's commitment, under its OFFICE 2000 strategy, to develop products that add significant value to customers' investments in systems and applications. The product brings to the large Digital user base the same proven programming tools developed by Wang to image-enable mainframe applications.
OPEN/image for VAX is designed for smooth, quick development of image services for VAX applications by a customer's existing programming staff. It enables VAX applications to initiate image functions processed on PC or PC LAN image servers. By processing images locally, there is no impact on VAX performance and no requirement for VAX system or network upgrades.
Image services are delivered transparently to the desktop, allowing PC users to store, retrieve and manage images within familiar VAX applications. The software permits customers to use industry- standard stand alone or networked PCs running Microsoft Windows to perform image functions.
"The products cost-effective integration of imaging technology with new or existing VAX applications and its ability to deliver images to the predominant desktop environment -- PCs running Windows - - are unmatched in the Digital Marketplace today," said David Goulden, vice president of marketing at Wang.
OPEN/image for VAX has two target markets. First, third party developers, database firms and systems integrators can use OPEN/image for VAX to enhance existing applications, creating new business opportunities. Second, the product allows the MIS community in industries, such as banking, government, healthcare, legal, insurance and manufacturing, to take advantage of Wang imaging technology while protecting system and training investments.
 Image Tool for Programmers
OPEN/image for VAX software is designed to make it easy for programmers to integrate image services into any VAX environment supporting Virtual Memory System (VMS) Release 5.4 or later. It consists of a high-level application programming interface (API) that resides on a VAX/VMS system and accesses image services provided by PC or PC LAN image servers.
This API is linked to the VAX application, resulting in seamless integration between the VAX data processing environment and the imaging software. PC LAN image servers can run on standard PC LAN operating systems from Banyan System Inc., Novell Inc., 3Com Corp. and IBM Corp.
The software uses the industry-standard Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). For connectivity, PC clients can be connected to a VAX either through a direct RS-232 connection or through DECNet using a DEC Terminal Server. To access a VAX, OPEN/image for VAX supports DynaComm, Asynchronous edition terminal emulation software from Future Soft Engineering Inc. of Houston.
The OPEN/image API software is priced from $4,200 to $66,625 per VAX, depending on number of system users. Workstation software, which provides DEC VT terminal emulation and the ability to carry out image functions within VAX applications, is priced at $1,790 per PC client. The products will be available in May.
Later in 1992, Wang plans to expand image server options by enabling Wang RISC Series systems to provide image functions to VAX/VMS applications.
