NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Television award show producer/director Walter C. Miller has been named executive producer and director of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' (ATAS') "44th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards" to be broadcast live Sunday, Aug. 30, from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, it was jointly announced today by ATAS President Leo Chaloukian and Peter Chernin, president, Fox Entertainment Group.
As the producer and director of the previous two primetime Emmy Programs, and director of three other primetime Emmy Awards (1980, 1987 and 1989), Miller's appointment will be his first as executive producer- director for the television awards program. A two-time Emmy winner for directing "Annie, the Women in a Life of a Man" and "S'Wonderful, S'Marvelous, S'Gershwin," he is also a member of ATAS' board of governors in the directors branch peer group.
In making the announcement, Chaloukian said, "The Academy is confident that the highly experienced Walter Miller will make the next primetime Emmy Awards a popular, innovative and entertaining special. Since Walter is an Academy governor, we feel especially comfortable that the prestigious interests of the Academy will be well represented in his caring hands. It is also important to the Academy that we have our executive producer in place this early -- a full six months before the next broadcast."
Said Chernin: "Walter Miller has done an outstanding job on past Emmy broadcasts and we know that this year he will provide our viewers with the excitement, comedy and glamour that make this such a special television event."
In addition to conceptualizing the theme for the next Emmy telecast and surveying options for an early Emmy host(s) announcement, Miller is involved in several other major projects and is currently getting ready to produce and direct his sixth consecutive Grammy Awards broadcast. His slate also includes producing and directing his third successive Tony Award special in June after serving as director of the previous three. Most recently, he finished producing and directing "Saturday Night at the Super Bowl" for network television. His diverse award show background also includes directing 23 Country Music Awards and five Peoples' Choice Awards specials.
The "44th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards" will represent the sixth consecutive year that the awards ceremony will be produced and telecast by Fox and the 15th consecutive year for its origination from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
