WALT DISNEY RECORDS LANDS UNPRECEDENTED NINE GRAMMY NOMINATIONS; 'ALADDIN' GRABS EIGHT KEY CATEGORIES

BURBANK, Calif., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Yesterday, Walt Disney Records garnered an unprecedented nine top Grammy nominations with key nods for the Academy Award-winning music to "Aladdin" and "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas." Disney's previous record for Grammy nominations was eight in 1992.
Written by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, "Aladdin" was named in eight categories, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "A Whole New World," while "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas," written by Danny Elfman, was nominated for Best Musical Album for Children.
The 36th Annual Grammy Award nominations include: Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for "A Whole New World"; Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or for Television for "A Whole New World" and "Friend Like Me"; Best Instrumental Composition Written for a Motion Picture or for Television for "Aladdin"; Best Musical Album for Children for "Aladdin" and "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas"; and Best Spoken Word Album for Children for "Aladdin's Sound and Story Theater."
"Aladdin" was recently certified triple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of more than 3 million units. The recording, written by the multiple award-winning team of Menken and Ashman ("The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast") and Rice ("Evita," "Jesus Christ Superstar"), has since become the best-selling soundtrack in the history of Walt Disney Records and spawned the chart-topping single, "A Whole New World" performed by Regina Belle and Peabo Bryson.
"As great as it has been to receive the acclaim of our peers in Hollywood, it is a dream come true to be recognized by the recording industry," says Menken. "On behalf of myself and my collaborators Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, I thank all the NARAS members from the bottom of my heart."
With its nomination for Best Musical Album for Children, "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas" continues Walt Disney Records' uninterrupted string of successes with soundtrack recordings. Written by renowned singer-songwriter-composer Elfman, the critically acclaimed soundtrack was a top seller for much of fall 1993.
Notes Chris Montan, senior vice president of Music, Walt Disney Pictures and Television: "In the beginning, our focus was to create an integrated screen musical. It's tremendously satisfying when the music crosses over and achieves this level of recognition from the recording industry. Of course, it all stems from the incredible creative team of Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Walter Afanasieff (producer of the single, `A Whole New World'). We're also very pleased with the recognition of Danny Elfman's score for `Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.'"
Walt Disney Records' nine 1993 nominations surpass the company's record performance last year when its "Beauty and the Beast" soundtrack earned seven nominations and four Grammy Awards. The company was also nominated in the 1992 Best Historical Album category for "The Music of Disney: A Legacy in Song."
"`Aladdin' and `Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas' are hallmarks in entertainment," comments Mark Jaffe, vice president of Walt Disney Records. "It's been the goal of Walt Disney Records to bring quality music to listeners of all ages. These Grammy nominations tell us we're succeeding."
