WALK MICHIGAN WINNERS JOIN ANNUAL LABOR DAY BRIDGE WALK, PRESIDENT BUSH
 IN HISTORIC EVENT
DETROIT, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Fifty-eight winners from the statewide Walk Michigan Program will join more than 70,000 walkers this weekend in the annual Mackinac Bridge walk on Labor Day morning. President George Bush is expected to join the historic, five-mile walk, along with Michigan Gov. John Engler.
The 58 winners are guests of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan, its affiliate Blue Care Network and the Michigan Recreation and Park Association (MRPA), who sponsor Walk Michigan.
The winners represent all areas of the state. The youngest winner is Christopher Stange, 5, from Rochester; the oldest is Edwin Rankin, 82, from Lansing.
"The Mackinac Bridge walk is the grand finale of the Walk Michigan Program, which promotes walking as one of the most practical forms of cardiovascular exercise," said Blues Community Affairs Assistant Vice President Jack N.E. Pitts. "Since 1985 when Walk Michigan began, more than 100,000 participating Michigan residents have walked approximately 276,000 miles, burning enough calories to lose nearly 8,000 pounds."
This year, local recreation and park facilities sponsored over 600 individual walks across the state. Some 24,000 walkers hiked 55,000 miles in the 1991 Walk Michigan events.
Random drawings of Walk Michigan walkers selected the winners for the three-day weekend trip that includes participation in the annual bridge walk.
The Labor Day Mackinac Bridge walk started in 1958 and symbolizes the bond between the residents of Michigan's two peninsulas. It is one of the state's most popular summer events.
