WALES: Work on hospital's new unit.

WORK is getting underway to build new emergency care units at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

A new medical assessment unit and the acute cardiac unit have opened near the Accident and Emergency Department and the out-of-hours GP service has moved their base onto the Maelor Hospital site.

Now work is progressing extending the emergency department and redeveloping the inside of the building.

This will allow dedicated areas to be created for treating minor injuries, for children and for a Clinical Decision Unit where patients can be observed and monitored while decisions are made on their diagnosis and care.

The development will also include a permanent base for the GP out of hours service.

Preparation work for this is already underway in the area outside the department, and building work will get fully underway on Friday and is expected to continue until February 2009.
