WALES: Man sent a text before hanging.

Byline: By CARL BUTLER

A MAN told his mother his girlfriend was seeing someone else the day before he hanged himself, an inquest was told.

The hearing in Wrexham heard Nicholas Geoffrey Davies, 41, also sent his girlfriend a mobile phone text before he died.

Mr Davies, of Bryn Hedd, Southsea, Wrexham, was discovered by his neighbour John Parry and members of his family on November 2 last year, hanging by a rope attached to a metal spar in the roof.

Mrs Griffiths said she saw her son at the Brymbo Sports and Social Club the day before he died. He seemed fine but said he had found out his girlfriend was seeing someone else.

The next day when neighbour John Parry became concerned he had not seen Mr Davies and his lights were still on at 3am, he alerted his family and rang the police.

They broke a pane of glass in the door and got into the house, to find Mr Davies. They cut him down and attempted resuscitation.

Pathologist Dr Anthony Burdge confirmed death was due to asphyxia.

North-east Wales coroner John Hughes made it clear it was not his job to explore why Mr Davies had killed himself, but simply to determine how he had come by his death.

Mr Hughes said Mr Davies had a long-term relationship which was "in difficulties" but it was not relevant to his inquiry.

Mrs Griffiths said Nicholas was one of two sons from her previous marriage. He had married in 1991, but the marriage had failed after 18 months.

He had once taken an overdose of Paracetamol but it was a cry for help and not a serious attempt.

He had also sought medical help for his depression and was taking medication because he wanted to get better.

With the degree of preparation and the text to his girlfriend, Mr Hughes said he had no choice but to return a verdict of suicide, adding: "It is a tragic waste of a young life."
