WAL-MART STORES ANNOUNCES ADDITION TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 BENTONVILLE, Ark., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT; PSE) announced that Frederick S. Humphries has been added to the company's board of directors.
 S. Robson Walton, chairman of the board of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., stated: "It is with great pride that we welcome Dr. Humphries to our board. With the addition of a results-oriented educator to our board, and with Fred's background and experience, we look forward to his participation and contribution to the success of our company."
 Humphries, president of Florida A&M University since 1985, served as president of Tennessee State University from 1974 to 1985. He received a B.S. in chemistry (Magna Cum Laude) from Florida A&M, and Ph.D. in physical chemistry from University of Pittsburgh. Other degrees conferred with honor include Distinguished Military Science Student, 1956; Distinguished Military Science Graduate, 1957; Most Outstanding Young Man in America, 1965; Most Outstanding Personalities in the South, 1967; and Honorary Doctorate Degree, Vincennes University, Indiana, 1989.
 Humphries has been very active in professional organizations as well as served in various capacities for many civic and community groups. He has received numerous honors of distinction, most recently:
 -- Drum Major for Justice Award in Education, Southern Christian Leadership Conference Women's Division, 1992.
 -- President's Award for Excellence in Higher Education, 100 Black Men of America, Inc., 1991.
 -- Thurgood Marshall Educational Achievement Award, Johnson Publishing Company, 1990.
 -- Distinguished Alumnus Award presented by the faculty of the College of Arts and Science, University of Pittsburgh on the 100th Anniversary of awarding the university's first Ph.D. in 1986.
 -- University Bicentennial Medal of Distinction, University of Pittsburgh 200th Anniversary.
 -- Centennial Medallion, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University on the university's 100 anniversary.
 -- Awarded Leadership Grant from the Prudential Life Insurance Company of America Foundation, 1988.
 Humphries is married to Antoinette McTurner; they reside in Tallahassee, Fla., and have three grown children.
 Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., currently operates 1,853 Wal-Mart stores, 256 SAM's Clubs, four Wal-Mart's HYPERMART*USA units and 21 major distribution centers across the country. Employing more than 470,000 associates nationwide, the company plans to open approximately 150 Wal- Mart stores and 45 SAM's Clubs in 1993. Wal-Mart stock trades on the New York and Pacific stock exchanges.
