WAL-MART NAMES S. ROBSON 'ROB' WALTON CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
BENTONVILLE, Ark., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- David Glass, president and chief executive officer of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT; PSE) ("Wal-Mart"), announced today that S. Robson "Rob" Walton, 47, has been named by the Wal-Mart board of directors (the "Board") to succeed his father as chairman of the board.
Rob joined the Wal-Mart board of directors in 1978. Since joining the company in 1978, he has served as secretary, general counsel, senior vice-president and most recently, vice chairman.
After having brought together what many say is the strongest and deepest management team in retailing, Sam Walton stepped aside from the CEO position of the company in early 1988. This senior management team, lead by David Glass has been at the forefront of the day-to-day decision making while Mr. Walton focused his attention on traveling the stores and clubs. The company has no plans to change its policies or direction and will continue to look for operational guidance from its current management team.
Rob Walton, speaking on behalf of the Walton family, observed that: "All of us are so fortunate to have such a capable management team. I think you would agree that David Glass is one of the best management talents in all of retailing today. Our management team, under David's leadership, will continue to lead our efforts to better serve our customers, our vendor partners, our associate partners and our shareholders in the future."
Wal-Mart (WMT) operates in a 43-state trade territory and its securities are listed on the New York and Pacific stock exchanges.
