WAL-MART LOOKS TO EXPAND VIDEOCART USE
CHICAGO, Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- After extensive customer testing

with VideOcart, Inc. (NASDAQ: VCRT) electronic shopping cart displays, Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE: WMT) now plans to expand application of the VideOcart network.
Wal-Mart has used the VideOcart system in their Rogers, Ark., store as a means to communicate merchandising information to customers as they shop. But the system also monitors the track of the cart throughout a shopper's visit. The system has allowed Wal-Mart to assess shopper traffic patterns, such as which departments shoppers visit first, visit most, or the time of day of visits, etc. This information is then used to adapt merchandising and promotional plans.
Based on these results, Wal-Mart is now planning to expand their use of VideOcart by extending system capabilities to match shopper track data to sales data captured by point-of-sale scanners when the shopper checks out. This feature will allow the retailer to better understand effectiveness of merchandising displays by knowing how often a shopper passing the display makes a decision to purchase the item.
"The system already tells us more about shopper preferences than other alternatives," notes Bob Martin, Wal-Mart's senior vice president, corporate information systems. "These extensions go beyond the current state-of-the-art. We'll be able to gauge our customers' reaction to promotional features and respond faster than ever before to their preferences."
As a next step, Wal-Mart wants to add another 100 display carts in their Rogers store as well as up to one thousand VideOcarts to be installed in five additional Wal-Mart stores.
John Malec, chairman and chief executive officer of VideOcart, Inc. said, "Our company couldn't be more thrilled. Not only does the participation of the world's number one retailer establish our credibility, Wal-Mart also challenges us technically -- which will lead to an even better product as we move beyond the development and testing phase."
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., headquartered in Bentonville, Ark., currently operates 1,683 Wal-Mart stores, 194 SAM's Clubs, four Wal-Mart's HYPERMART-USA units and 19 major distribution centers across the company's 41-state trade territory. The company reported sales of $32.6 billion and net income of $1.29 billion for the fiscal year ended Jan. 31, 1991. Wal-Mart stock trades on the New York and Pacific exchanges.
Chicago-based VideOcart, Inc. installs and operates a proprietary network for the delivery of marketing messages to video display screens affixed to shopping carts in various retail environments. This targetable network allows consumer goods manufacturers and leading retailers to provide their shoppers with valuable information and customer service, aisle-by aisle and store-by-store, at the point of purchase. VideOcart is a development stage company traded under the symbol VCRT on NASDAQ.
