WAL-MART ANNOUNCES EXTENSIVE 1992 VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE

WAL-MART ANNOUNCES EXTENSIVE 1992 VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE
BENTONVILLE, Ark., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- An extensive 1992 voter registration drive was announced today at the corporate offices of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT; PSE).
The retailer said it is joining forces with League of Women Voters and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) for an endeavor scheduled later this year.
Plans call for a 1992 voter registration drive during National Voter Registration Week, Sept. 12-19, at Wal-Mart stores nationwide. The League of Women Voters and AARP will provide volunteer registrars at Wal-Mart stores; voters will be registered in time for the November elections.
Americans are on the move; within a two-year period, nearly one-third change residences. Most often, that means that they have to re-register to vote. And Americans are busy; double-income and single-parent families comprise nearly 40 percent of the work force. With the day-to-day juggle of work-home-family, convenient, simple ways to register to vote are important.
"We are both honored and excited to be working with two such outstanding organizations," stated David Glass, president and CEO, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. "Voter registration is a key initial step to a successful turnout at the polls. Wal-Mart is responding to our customers who tell us they want the opportunity to be involved in the electoral process," Glass added.
"The League is pleased Wal-mart and AARP have joined the League's Take Back the System campaign in 1992," said Linda Polk, president, League of Women Voters of Arkansas. "Because of the large amount of customer traffic in Wal-Mart stores, an opportunity is created to make it convenient for thousands of voters to register."
"The American Association of Retired Persons is proud to join with the League of Women Voters - Arkansas, and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. in this major citizenship endeavor -- a nationwide voter registration drive," said Jim Butler, director, AARP/VOTE. "Through AARP/VOTE, our association's non-partisan voter education program, we have been registering voters and educating citizens on election issues -- but not on this large a scale. I am sure that our combined efforts to make voter registration convenient will be a big help to many people to exercise their citizenship rights. We are pleased to be a part of this project," Butler added.
For the last six years, the League has registered thousands of voters in a limited number of Wal-Mart stores; however, the partnership believes this year's drive will be the largest voter registration drive in the nation's history.
