WAHLCO ENVIRONMENTAL ANNOUNCES $3 MILLION ORDER FOR STAGED NOX REDUCTION SYSTEM

SANTA ANA, Calif., Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Wahlco Environmental Systems Inc. (NYSE: WAL) today announced that its Wahlco Inc. subsidiary has been awarded a contract in excess of $3 million by Public Service Electric & Gas Co., headquartered in Newark, N.J., for its staged NOx reduction system (SNRS). The system will be installed by PSE&G and will serve a portion of Mercer Station Unit No. 2, a 321 MW coal-fired wet-bottom continuous slagging boiler. The announcement was made by Henry N. Huta, president and chief executive officer.
"Although we have been operating our NOx reduction system in a gas-fired utility for 18 months, this contract marks the company's first such installation in a coal-fired plant," stated Huta. "The technology will aid the utility in complying with Title 1 of the Clean Air Act, which specifies compliance requirements in defined ozone nonattainment areas. This order is significant to us because the market for this type of technology, in the U.S. alone, is projected to be in excess of $1 billion through the year 2000."
The contract will be implemented in two phases beginning in the spring of 1994. In Phase I, Wahlco will demonstrate the level of emission reduction accomplished by in-duct catalyst. In Phase II, catalytic air heater baskets will be installed to provide additional emission reduction. This arrangement maximizes NOx reduction without requiring extensive modifications to duct work, as would a traditional SCR system.
Wahlco Environmental Systems Inc. designs and manufactures air pollution control and power efficiency equipment and provides related services to electric utilities, cogeneration plants, petrochemical refineries and industrial manufacturers worldwide.
