WAHLCO ANNOUNCES RESTRUCTURING OF OPERATIONS

SANTA ANA, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Wahlco Environmental Systems Inc. (NYSE: WAL) today announced a series of restructuring actions which will result in a pre-tax one-time fourth quarter charge of approximately $10 million which will impact earnings per share by $0.37-$0.42. The company plans to announce financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended Dec. 31, 1993, during the week of Feb. 7. The announcement was made by Henry N. Huta, president and chief executive officer.
Included in the charges will be costs to cover phasing down in 1994 the operations of Wahlco Power Products Inc. in Fairmont, W.Va., and Wahlco Engineered Products Canada Inc. in Montreal. Manufacturing earmarked for Canada will be consolidated in Lewiston, Maine.
"We are taking these actions in response to the persistent sluggish worldwide economy; on-going delays in compliance with the 1990 Clean Air Act by U.S. utilities; and relative to Wahlco Power Products, unusual competitive pressures," stated Huta. "We will continue to work to improve our financial performance and enhance our competitive position."
Wahlco Environmental Systems Inc. designs and manufactures air pollution control and power efficiency equipment and provides related services to electric utilities, cogeneration plants, petrochemical refineries and industrial manufacturers worldwide.
