MIDLAND X Factor hero Wagner Fiuza Carrilho is being backed for a Christmas number one by internet protesters.

Carrilho, who at 54 is the show's oldest contestant, stands to benefit from a campaign aimed at running the show "into the ground".

It could see the retired PE teacher from Pensnett - who used to have a pet lion back in his native Brazil - reliving the glories of US rockers Rage Against The Machine last Christmas.

Then, a campaign on Facebook succeeded in getting them to number one at the expense of last year's X Factor winner Joe McElderry.

And this year, Facebook user Thanxx wrote on the site: "If you fancy a really crazy Xmas number 1 this year vote Wagner!!!

If you despise all the X Factor stands for vote Wagner!

"If you hate Simon Cowell vote Wagner! If you want to help run the X Factor into the ground vote Wagner!" Simon Matthews wrote: "I think Wagner would make for a fun Xmas number 1, gotta be better than the alternative that one of the other contestants would bring out!" And Merton32 wrote: "Let's get Wagner to win! - join this Facebook group!!!!!.. would be v. funny!!!! - Jedward eat your hearts out!!!! X Factor Protest -Wagner to win."

Wagner performed a medley of Spice Up Your Life and Living La Vida Loca on Saturday's show and got through to the next week.

His performance on the guilty pleasures-themed week left Cheryl Cole cold, with the judge saying: "There was a lot of guilty going on up there. I don't know if there was a lot of pleasure for me."

Simon Cowell was also unimpressed, telling Louis Walsh: "Do you understand how crazy this is? You criticise my song choice and then you give Wagner the Spice Girls."

John Adeleye, aged 29, who was voted out on Sunday, also accused Wagner of causing rows in the X Factor house.

"Wagner was the only division in the house," he said. "People had to endure him, they were crying and having a moan and I was the only person to stand up to him and tell him like it was."
