WACKENHUT TO CONSTRUCT, MANAGE NEW TEXAS PRISON

CORAL GABLES, Fla., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Wackenhut Corrections Corporation has completed contract negotiations with the Texas Board of Criminal Justice for the design and construction of a $10,900,000 correctional facility for female inmates, to be built adjacent to its existing correctional facility in Lockhart, Texas.
Contract negotiations are also completed for Wackenhut Corrections Corporation to manage the facility for a two-year period at an annual cost to the State of Texas of approximately $5 million. The construction phase of the project is being financed by tax-exempt revenue bonds.
The contract, which will be finalized and signed by both parties on Sept. 20, provides for a doubling of the prisoner capacity at the Lockhart site from the existing 500 to 1,000 inmates. The expansion will result in the hiring of approximately 100 additional persons to supplement the present level of 115.
The new construction is expected to begin soon after the official ground-breaking ceremony which will be held on Sept. 30 and the facility will be ready for occupancy sometime next fall.
Wackenhut Corrections has managed the existing prison facility, the Lockhart Secure Work Program Facility, under a contract with the State of Texas since its opening in January 1993. The new facility will be a Pre-Release center for female inmates from the Texas penal system who are serving the final months of their sentences, and will provide them the benefits of rehabilitative and educational programs.
Wackenhut Corrections Corporation operates 12 correctional and detention facilities in five states and in Australia. Other sites in Texas managed by the corporation include state correctional facilities in San Antonio, Kyle, Bridgeport, and Fort Worth.
It is a subsidiary of The Wackenhut Corporation (NYSE: WAK), one of the world's largest companies which provide security-related services to business, industry and government agencies.
The Wackenhut Corporation, based in Coral Gables, Fla., was founded in 1954 by George R. Wackenhut, a former Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, who now serves as the chairman of the board and chief executive officer.
