WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Wachovia Corporation (NYSE: WB) today unveiled the design of its new North Carolina corporate headquarters building which will be centered on a two-acre site at the southern entrance to downtown Winston-Salem. The site is bordered by Main, First, Second and Liberty streets.
Designed by Cesar Pelli and Associates of New Haven, Conn., the 600,000 square foot, 28-story building will have an outer skin of light-colored granite and glass, with stainless steel accents. The building will accommodate up to 1,600 employees.
Starting from a square base, the tower will develop into smaller shapes two-thirds of the way up, with recessed corners defining each new stage. The structure will be topped with a modified dome shaped from granite, giving the building the appearance of being carved from a single block of stone.
A two-story cafeteria will extend from the First Street side of the building to take advantage of the site's southern exposure. In a design reflective of a traditional southern veranda, the dining area will feature glass walls surrounded by steel trellises on the exterior. The trellises, which will be planted over with vines, will extend over a terrace with outdoor eating areas.
"The building has a unique silhouette, and gives a sense of permanence and authority to anchor the southern end of Winston-Salem," said Pelli.
The banking lobby will be accessible from Main Street and from the main entrance lobby facing Second Street. The entrance lobby will be spacious and feature a richly patterned stone floor and a combination of stone and wood paneled walls. An enclosed service dock and the entrance to a three-level, 200 space underground parking garage for customers and employees will be located on the Liberty Street side of the building. Additional employee parking will be provided in a new municipal parking garage one block to the east. The deck will be connected to the building by a secure, climate-controlled underground walkway and a street-level strollway.
Landscaping for the building has been designed by Balmori & Associates, also of New Haven. The centerpiece will be an oval granite plaza interspersed with greenery on the building's north side and surrounded by gardens to the east and quiet seating areas to the west. A greenway along Main Street will create a tree-lined boulevard.
"Wachovia was founded on Main Street and its headquarters buildings have been within a few hundred feet of each other throughout its more than 114 years of existence. We are pleased that the new Wachovia building will continue this tradition," said John G. Medlin Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Wachovia Corporation. "Cesar Pelli has designed for Wachovia an attractive and distinctive building that captures the character of our company."
Construction of the facility will begin in early 1994 with completion expected by the fall of 1995. When completed, it will serve as the North Carolina corporate headquarters for Wachovia Corporation, Wachovia Bank of North Carolina and other subsidiaries.
