WACHOVIA SETS BUILDING SIZE

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Wachovia Corporation (NYSE: WB) said today that its new North Carolina headquarters building planned for downtown Winston-Salem will have 28 floors and approximately 600,000 square feet of space.
"Wachovia is committed to a headquarters building that will be appropriate to the surroundings and an attractive addition to the downtown area," said L.M. Baker Jr., president and chief operating officer of Wachovia Corporation.
The new building will have three levels of parking under a landscaped plaza. At a meeting yesterday, the City of Winston-Salem Board of Aldermen gave tentative approval for a plan to construct a 900-space parking deck for use by Wachovia and other employees in the downtown area. The proposed site for the deck is east of City Hall on a portion of the block bordered by Church, Chestnut, Third and First Streets.
Earlier estimates suggested that Wachovia's headquarters building would have about 20 floors and contain approximately 400,000 square feet. The additional floors and square footage are the result of a space planning process designed to gain operating efficiency and accommodate Wachovia's current and future space needs.
Architectural elements of the building's exterior design are still being refined. The final design of the structure will be unveiled in early fall.
