WABASH NATIONAL CORPORATION ANNOUNCES ROADRAILER ORDER FOR UNITED KINGDOM
WABASH NATIONAL CORPORATION ANNOUNCES
ROADRAILER ORDER FOR UNITED KINGDOM
LAFAYETTE, Ind., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Wabash National Corporation (NYSE: WNC) has received an order for 100 RoadRailer trailers from the Charterail Ltd. of the United Kingdom, Lawrence J. Gross, president of the RoadRailer division announced today. Charterail Ltd., an intermodal operator and RoadRailer licensee based in London, will be the purchaser and/or operator of the units.
The order will consist of dry vans and curtain-sided Mark V RoadRailer trailers as well as RoadRailer MK V rail bogies. The equipment is designed to meet the special operating requirements for rail and highway in the United Kingdom. The design and production of the prototypes is being conducted on a "fast-track" basis which will see the three prototype units in operation in the United Kingdom as early as April of this year. The order is contingent on the availability of financing for the equipment and the certification of the RoadRailer system by British Rail (the national railway of the United Kingdom). RoadRailer will provide three prototype trailers to support the testing program.
The trailers will be constructed in large part at Wabash National's facility in Lafayette. They will then be sent to the United Kingdom for final fit-up and delivery to the customer. The RoadRailer Mark V rail bogies to support the trailers will be provided by RoadRailer Europa, (a joint venture of Wabash National and IBI) and RoadRailer's German licensee. The equipment will then immediately enter European revenue service operated by Charterail.
Charterail, Ltd. is currently offering service in the United Kingdom using intermodal equipment. Its initial service from Melton-Mowbray to London and Manchester has recently been augmented by new services to Scotland and France. RoadRailer, with its greater operating efficiencies and reduced costs, is projected to play a significant role in Charterail's future.
Donald J. Ehrlich, Wabash National's president stated, "Certification of the RoadRailer system in the United Kingdom is considered an important step in RoadRailer's development in Europe. While RoadRailer system has already received technical approvals from the German, French, Danish and Austrian national railways, it is likely Charterail will develop the first full-scale commercial operation of bi- modal trailers in Europe." Commercial operation of RoadRailer equipment is under discussion or development in each of these countries. All European RoadRailer equipment will be compatible regardless of the nation of manufacture, and joint operations and interchange are considered likely in the future. Commercial operations are well developed in Australia and New Zealand, as well as the United States.
