WABASH NATIONAL CORPORATION ANNOUNCES NORFOLK SOUTHERN PLACES LARGEST ROADRAILER ORDER IN HISTORY

LAFAYETTE, Ind., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Wabash National Corporation (NYSE: WNC) announced today that Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) has ordered 713 RoadRailer Mark V trailers and 357 RoadRailer rail bogies for its Triple Crown service. This is the largest single order for RoadRailer trailers in the system's history.
The 53' trailers will utilize "plate-wall" construction, according to Lawrence Gross, RoadRailer Division President. With a door opening of over 111" in height, clear interior height of 110" and interior width of 101-1/4", these units will provide cubic capacity equal to that of state-of-the-art highway trailers, and superior to even the latest design domestic containers now being tested. This is the first RoadRailer trailer to utilize plate-wall construction, and a prototype has been in service with Triple Crown for several months.
The new trailer is a result of an ongoing design effort by RoadRailer initiated in 1991 at the time of its acquisition by Wabash National Corporation. "With the support and expertise of Wabash National, we have been able to improve many features on the RoadRailer trailer while significantly reducing its cost and weight" Gross said. Among the new features is a unique RoadRailer air-ride suspension system which reduces the trailer weight by hundreds of pounds.
The new trailers represent about a 25 percent increase in Triple Crown's RoadRailer fleet. The new equipment will be used to support Triple Crown Service's rapid growth, including its upcoming expansion into the Northeast over Conrail, which is slated for startup on early 1993. Norfolk Southern and Conrail have recently announced that they are in negotiations for Conrail to purchase 50 percent of Triple Crown.
Wabash National is the second largest highway trailer manufacturer in the United States, providing a complete product line of highway semi- trailers. Through its RoadRailer Division, it is the world's leading supplier of bi-modal trailers and rail equipment.
