 W. DOUGLASS SMITH RETIRES FROM PLM INTERNATIONAL
 SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 14 -- /PRNewswire/ -- San Francisco-based PLM

International Inc. (AMEX: PLM) today reported that W. Douglass Smith, president of PLM Securities Corp. and a member of the board of directors of PLM International, has today announced his retirement from the company. Smith, age 56, indicated his decision was a difficult one given the "stimulating and challenging" environment at PLM, but that now "there are other opportunities and challenges to explore, not the least of which is to take a welcome sabbatical traveling."
Smith has been associated with PLM since 1973 having served as president of PLM Securities Corp. since 1985 and as a director of PLM International since 1987. During his term, the company became only the second equipment leasing company to raise over $1 billion in syndicated equity and is now the largest equipment leasing syndicator in U.S. history, having raised approximately $1.2 billion.
Smith emphasized that his decision to retire is a personal one and not in any way related to the restructuring plan announced today by PLM International. Robert N. Tidball, president and chief executive officer, stated, "We will all miss Doug. He has been an integral part of our development since origination of the company. We wish him well in his retirement."
Allen V. Hirsch, executive vice president and vice chairman of the board of directors of PLM International, will assume Smith's responsibilities. Hirsch has been with the company for more than 10 years in varying executive capacities and has been a board member since 1989. He is very familiar with the executives of the firms that constitute the company's syndication network.
PLM International is a transportation equipment leasing company specializing in the management of equipment on operating leases. The company is also the leading sponsor of syndicated investment programs organized to invest primarily in transportation equipment.
