Volunteers to strike in butty row.
HOSPITAL volunteers have threatened to strike - in a row over sandwiches.The North Wales WRVS volunteers are unhappy at the national charity's plans to use a major Cornwall-based food company to supply a shop and tea bar at Gwynedd Hospital, Bangor, instead of a nearby delicatessen which has provided the butties for 20 years.
A petition has been launched to support the deli, where six jobs are in jeopardy as a result of the change.
The WRVS - formerly the Women's Royal Voluntary Service, which provides volunteers to help older people at home and in hospitals - celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2013.
Charity managers have held a meeting with dozens of opponents of the plans to explain the decision to bring sandwiches across Britain.
Sally Rivers, WRVS head of service for Wales, said: "We have to be competitive and unfortunately that means looking at all our services and making sure that we can, wherever possible, make savings.
That is why having a national supplier makes sense."
