Volunteers build a discovery playground in San Luis Obispo.

Volunteers build a discovery playground in San Luis Obispo In Greek mythology, the Muses are the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne. Considered guiding spirits, each presides over a different art or science> from them, we get our word museum. At the new San Luis Obispo Children's Museum, muses came in the form of Cal Poly students, chamber of commerce members, volunteers, and--most important--children.

This grass-roots group opened the doors last September on a small but vital discovery playground. Here, youngsters can fly a space shuttle, draw petroglyphs in a mock Chumash cave, or take part in dozens of other activities.

The museum shows you don't need a large budge or space to inspire children. Using mostly volunteer organizers and labor, the 2,000-square-foot museum was installed in a former transmission shop, leased from the city for 18 months. Start-up costs were less than $40,000.

The 25 exhibits include a partially built house to show how houses are made, and the KIDS news station, where children can anchor a newscast.

The museum, at 1010 Nipomo Street, is open 10 to 3 weekends. Admission is $2. From U.S. 101, exit northeast on Marsh Street> go four blocks to Nipomo and turn lef. Park across from the museum.
