Volunteering dynamo.

Arlene Holzman, a 74-year-old grandmother from Symmes Township, Ohio, first heard about the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation 18 years ago. Since that time, she has given countless hours to help the foundation and other worthy causes in Hamilton County. An article entitled "Hometown Hero: Arlene Holzman" in the Cincinnati Enquirer for April 24 detailed some of this amazing woman's contributions. Week after week, Mrs. Holzman rises early to help out at the foundation; she recently rose at 5 a.m. in order to head up registration for the foundation's annual September walk. The foundation's executive director, Marie Uhlenbrock, told the Enquirer that the foundation is fortunate to have Holzman: "She's dependable and gives 100 percent. We wish we could duplicate her."

Mrs. Holzman has also tutored first-grade students in the Kings School District weekly for three years, and she helps kindergarten students learn letter sounds. She has volunteered weekly at the Cincinnati Zoo since 1974, making crafts for the Zoosters Treasure Shop to raise money for the education fund. At Christmastime, she is the zoo's "Mrs. Claus" and dons her costume to read to preschoolers.

This busy mother of five and grandmother of 12 has also been a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, a national philanthropic organization, for 30 years. The group raises money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and to build houses for the needy.
