Voice of the Daily Mirror: On the ball..

IT was a great weekend for most of the home nations competing for a place at the European Championship finals.

England, Scotland and Wales all got the results they needed to either get them on a plane to Portugal or to keep the dream alive.

But Northern Ireland and the Republic let the side down.

It is now 1,242 minutes since Sammy McIlroy's team last scored.

But it was a brave performance and it is time to build for the future.

At least the defence showed some fight over the qualifiers with only eight goals conceded. There may be hope.
