Vodacom exceeds 16m subscribers in South Africa.
TELECOMWORLDWIRE-26 October 2005-Vodacom exceeds 16m subscribers in South Africa(C)1994-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com
The customer base of Vodacom, a mobile operator in South Africa, has exceeded 16 million, contradicting previous reports that the market had almost reached saturation.
Vodacom said South Africa's cellular market is expected to grow, reaching 40m subscribers in the next three to five years, with current business models staying in place. The country's cellular industry currently has penetration rates of more than 57% on a population basis and Vodacom said the growth would result in a near 90% penetration rate.
Vodacom said ICASA and the government had enabled the free market to grow in South Africa - the government is currently examining the country's mobile phone market and the industry is reportedly in the middle of further liberalisation.
The growth of the free market has enabled around 27m people in South Africa to have mobile phones to connect with friends and family, contribute to the country's economy and join the worldwide communications environment. This has resulted in new jobs, greater communication, social improvements and a more active and stable economy.
