DESPITE your best intentions you've overdone the sunbathing - and now your body is paying the price.

But flaky, peeling skin and ultra-dry hair doesn't have to be the lasting souvenir of your holiday. So if you're looking worse for wear, and in need of some urgent TLC, speed up the recovery process with some post-sun skin savers.

'For mild over-exposure to the sun, aftersun is very helpful because it both re-moisturises skin but also soothes and cools,' says Mike Brown, Boots suncare scientific adviser.

' This is particularly the case if the aftersun contains ingredients such as aloe vera. Cool showers and wraps soaked in cold water will also help and drink plenty of water

Aloe vera calms irritated skins and has skin-healing properties, so try Vaseline Intensive Care Aloe Fresh body lotion, pounds 2.79, Clinique After Sun Balm with Aloe, pounds 11.50, or Neal's Yard Remedies Aloe Vera Cooling spray, pounds 6.50 But aloe vera's not the only ingredient that can help. Plant and herb extracts as well as oils can have benefits too.

Dermalogica After Sun Repair, pounds 22.20 (0800 591 818), is a herbal-based treatment balm with Japanese alder seed extract, while Elemis After Sun Soothing Milk, pounds 15.50, contains sunflower seed oil and oatmilk. Dr Hauschka's Aftersun, pounds 9 (01386 792 642) has rosehip and quince extracts to stop skin from drying out.

If your skin's just parched, try a rich cream containing moisturising butter.

Today's aftersuns can do more than just moisturise - some of the latest double up to lighten the load on your travels. Cyclax 3-in-1 Aftersun Lotion, pounds 2.99 (01685 843 384), and Clarins After Sun Moisturiser Anti-Mosquito Formula, pounds 15, both also act as an insect repellent and tan maintainer.

Or try Asda's Sun System Aftersun with shimmer moisturiser, pounds 1.96, and Biotherm's Happy Legs, pounds 15 (0800 037 1020), which refreshes and tones.

FACE Faces need extra special care, especially after they have caught the sun, so make sure you pick products that have been specially created for them.

To cool your skin down, you should pick up some Korres Yoghurt Cooling Gel, pounds 14.50 (020 7581 6455), or No7 Cooling Facial Balm, pounds 7.50 from Boots.
