Vital: Cool ways to soothe your burning skin.

DESPITE your best intentions you've overdone the sunbathing - and now your body is paying the price. But flaky, peeling skin and ultra-dry hair doesn't have to be the lasting souvenir of your holiday. Speed up the recovery process with post-sun skin savers. 'For mild over-exposure, aftersun is helpful because as well as re-moisturising it also soothes and cools,' says Mike Brown, Boots suncare scientific adviser. 'This is particularly the case if it contains ingredients such as aloe vera. Cool showers will also help and drink lots of water to combat sun-induced dehydration.'

HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO HELP YOU RECOVER: # Treat burning skin with a cream containing soothing ingredients such as aloe vera which has skin-healing properties. Try Vaseline Intensive Care Aloe Fresh Body Lotion, pounds 2.79; Clinique After Sun Balm with Aloe, pounds 11.50, or Neal's Yard Remedies Aloe Vera Cooling Spray, pounds 6.50 (01747 834 634/ www.nealsyardremedies.com) # Plant and herb extracts as well as oils can have benefits too.

Try Dermalogica After Sun Repair, pounds 22.20 (0800 591 818), a herbal-based balm with Japanese alder seed extract to help correct sun damage; Elemis After Sun Soothing Milk, pounds 15.50, with sunflower seed oil and oatmilk or Dr Hauschka's Aftersun, pounds 9 (01386 792 642) with rosehip extracts to stop skin drying out. # Faces need extra special care, so pick products created for them. To cool skin, pick up Korres Yoghurt Cooling Gel, pounds 14.50 (020 7581 6455), or No7 Cooling Facial Balm, pounds 7.50, from Boots
