Visual Networks Participates With Microsoft in Working Group Focused On Active OSS Solutions.

ROCKVILLE, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 6, 1999--

Visual UpTime's Broad Deployment within Public Network Services

Provides Leverage for Microsoft(R) Windows NT(R) Server

Visual Networks(R), Inc. (NASDAQ:VNWK), the originator and leading provider of WAN service level management systems, announces today the company is participating in Microsoft's working group focused on Active OSS solutions. The purpose of the working group is to define a framework for operations support systems and business support systems (OSS/BSS) applications that will best meet the needs of both existing and new service providers as they deploy network services to their customers. The group is focusing on solutions based on the Active OSS Framework, which facilitates the development of products, technologies, and services by third parties that support telecommunications company processes such as operations, administration, maintenance, service provisioning, billing, and customer care.

The Active OSS Framework also facilitates the extension of existing OSSs as well as provides the basis for developing new, leading-edge OSSs. Additionally, this initiative encourages service provider use of commercial off-the-shelf technology to build OSSs that are adaptable, efficient, well-integrated, accessible, and easily programmed for today's telecommunications markets. An additional key benefit of the Active OSS Framework for service providers is reducing time-to-market for their commercial network services.

Leading service providers have incorporated the Visual Networks' Visual UpTime platform, based on Microsoft Windows NT Server, into their frame relay or ATM product or service offerings. These Visual Networks' customers include AT&T, Ameritech, Bell Atlantic, GTE, Intermedia Communications, MCI WorldCom, and Sprint.

"Visual Networks has been successful in helping network service providers deliver low cost, high quality public network services through deployment of a scalable management system that meets the customer interface and back office requirements of these carriers," said Henry Cheli, senior vice president of channel operations, Visual Networks. "Our success in this market has provided an entry point for Windows NT as a valuable tool for helping service providers meet their requirements and has positioned Visual UpTime as the market standard for carrier deployment of public network services."

"As data services become ever more critical to the success of businesses around the world, customers are demanding that service providers deliver an increasing range of service level guarantees", said Jonathan Usher, telecom industry marketing manager, Microsoft. "Solutions such as Visual UpTime, which leverages the power and flexibility of Windows NT Server and the Active OSS Framework to enable service level management functions, are therefore important tools for carriers to use to differentiate their service offerings."

"Windows NT has been a valuable tool in our developments to build a scalable management system service providers can use as the foundation for the deployment of public network services. Our support of the Active OSS program is a logical addition to our efforts," said Bob Troutman, Visual Networks' senior vice president, advanced planning. "Additionally, Windows NT will play a continued role in our recently announced Service Reliability Architecture, in which we are extending Visual UpTime's support to include emerging IP WAN services. This will allow service providers to reduce their cost of operations while providing for a much more reliable WAN service."
