Violence after cop kills man.

PROTESTERS clashed with police, torched buildings and threw bricks after an officer shot dead an armed man during a chase.

More than 100 people took to the streets of Milwaukee to demonstrate against the shooting.

Tom Barrett, mayor of the US city, pleaded for calm.

The 23-year-old suspect was shot on Saturday as he tried to flee after police pulled his car over.

Police said the man, who had a criminal record, was armed with a stolen gun.

Milwaukee Common Council president Ashanti Hamilton said: "We understand the frustration people feel with the police community nationally.

"But we have to be able to restore order to these neighbourhoods."

In New York, meanwhile, the leader of a mosque and a friend were shot dead as they left afternoon prayers.

Maulama Akonjee, 55, and Thara Uddin, 64, were killed about 2pm on Saturday. The gunman fled.

Police said there was no evidence that the men were targeted for being Muslim.

But later members of the local Bangladeshi Muslim community held a rally, demanding that police treat the killings as a hate crime.
